What is Pilates Mat? What is Barre?

The precise exercises developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920’s are tried and true in building core strength; increasing flexibility and range of motion; improving coordination, controlling movement; and working with alignment and deep, full breathing. Mat work is the core of Pilates training, and with practice and intention, students will build strong abdominal and postural muscles that help support the skeletal system. Pilates exercises focus on using the breath to channel core energy into the center of the body and out to the limbs.

Barre classes combine core work, weight training, yoga, and exercises at a ballet barre. The barre helps maintain balance and alignment while students focus on isometric strength training (the practice of holding a pose while contracting a specific set of muscles.) Students can expect to do many small range-of-motion exercises and multiple repetitions to build strength. Barre classes build stability, strength, and balance as students sculpt and tone their muscles.
