Thinking About a Retreat? Start Here

Yoga and wellness retreats often come with assumptions and it’s completely normal to have questions or hesitations. This page addresses some of the most common things people wonder (or worry about) when considering our retreats.

Is the retreat all yoga, all day?

No.

Yoga is an important anchor, but it doesn’t fill the entire day. Most retreats include one to two yoga sessions per day, balanced with time for rest, meals, exploration, and optional activities.

Retreat days are intentionally designed with space built in. There’s time to move, and also time to do “you” whether that means reading, walking, swimming, exploring, or simply doing nothing at all.

What if I want to come with a friend, partner, or family member who doesn’t want to do yoga?

That can absolutely work.

Many retreats include participants who attend with a partner, friend, or family member who chooses not to participate in yoga—or who participates selectively. Yoga sessions are optional, and retreat locations are chosen with flexibility in mind, offering plenty of ways to enjoy the experience beyond the yoga itself.

Non-yoga participants often spend their time exploring the area, resting, enjoying meals, joining excursions, or simply having unstructured time in a beautiful place. In many cases, people find a rhythm that works well for everyone.

If you’re considering bringing someone who won’t be practicing yoga, we’re happy to talk through the specifics of a particular retreat to make sure it’s a good fit.

Do I need to know some of the local language when traveling abroad?

No.

You do not need to speak or know the local language to attend an international retreat. Retreat logistics, accommodations, and group activities are all arranged with English-speaking support, and we help guide the flow of the experience.

That said, learning a few words or phrases can be fun but it’s entirely optional and never required.

Do I need to have taken classes with you to attend?

No.

Retreats are open to everyone. While many participants have connections to Sellwood Yoga, just as many do not. You don’t need to be a studio member or have any prior relationship with the studio to attend.

People come from a wide range of backgrounds, locations, and experiences.

What if I’m traveling alone?

You won’t be the only one.

Many people attend retreats on their own, and it’s very common for participants to arrive without knowing anyone else. Retreats tend to create connection naturally—through shared meals, practices, and experiences without pressure to be social all the time.

There’s room for conversation and for quiet, and both are respected.

Do I have to participate in everything?

Not at all.

All activities, including yoga sessions, excursions, and group experiences are optional. You’re welcome to take part fully, or to opt out when you need rest or personal time.

Retreats tend to be most nourishing when people feel free to listen to their own needs.

What if I’m newer to yoga or returning after time away?

That’s completely fine.

Our retreats are designed to support a wide range of experience levels. We offer options and modifications, and the emphasis is on practicing in a way that feels appropriate for your body not on achieving specific poses or keeping up with others.

What if I have injuries, limitations, or specific needs?

Please let us know ahead of time.

We have extensive experience working with different bodies, needs, and life stages, and I do my best to create retreats that are adaptable and inclusive. We are always happy to talk through concerns so you feel supported.

Are the retreats spiritual or restrictive?

They’re not.

While yoga and mindfulness are part of the experience, our retreats are not religious, dogmatic, or prescriptive. There’s no expectation to believe, practice, eat, or live in any particular way.

Retreats are designed to feel supportive and inclusive, not rigid or performative. You’re encouraged to engage in ways that feel genuine and appropriate for you.

What tends to surprise people about retreats?

A few things people often mention afterward:

  • How balanced the days feel

  • How easy it is to settle in

  • How supportive the group feels without forcing connection

  • How restorative simple things—shared meals, quiet mornings, time outdoors—can be

Many people leave feeling more rested and clear than they expected.

Is a retreat right for me right now?

Only you can answer that but curiosity is often a good place to start.

People come to retreats for many reasons: rest, transition, adventure, connection, or simply the desire to experience a place more fully. Many come for the experience of wellness travel with other like-minded people.
