One of my very favorite sessions during my yoga teacher training at Sellwood Yoga was one that Savonn led about weaving creativity into teaching. An activity within this was collaging. Savonn offered a big stack of materials—magazines, beautiful paper, card stock—and we were encouraged to create with these in whatever way our muses led. It was so joyful and peaceful to lay on the floor like a kid and just let our craft flags fly.
It’s long been my dream to recreate this experience for our community, and hooray! Dreams really do come true. I’ll be hosting a Vision Board Workshop this coming Sunday, January 19, from 3:30–5:30 pm. During this time, we’ll have a brief meditation, do a bit of yoga stretching, and then go to town with the ginormous treasure trove of materials I’ll be bringing. I’ll provide all the supplies and tools you’ll need to express yourself in collage. You are welcome to bring your materials too. The more we have to work with the better.
Of course, your creation goes home with you.
So about that trove… My sister gifted me with a tremendous amount of magazines, ads, clip art brochures, and other paper ephemera from the 20th century. These had been the reference archives for my brother-in-law Doug’s late Uncle Virgil, who was a designer in Portland. He actively collected and archived whatever caught his eye from the ’40s through the ’80s. It’s an amazing historical record of that era, worthy of perusing on its own. But the great part is we can repurpose these gems in our 21st-century vision. I hope that Uncle Virgil would be pleased that his collection will be loved and used in this new way.
See you in the studio for creativity, community, and FUN!
