Never practiced yoga before? Our Beginner’s Yoga series welcomes the absolute beginner or anyone wanting or needing a very basic and easy to follow introduction to Yoga. Our instructors will “hold your hand” and help you to take the worry and fear out of starting something new. Together we will start at square one and talk about and experience really simple yoga poses. You will learn the basic building blocks for a safe, supported and easy going yoga practice. Each week we will revisit what we learned the week before and slowly build on that foundation. You will be practicing with a group of other newbies under the guidance of non intimidating instructors who know what it feels like to be a beginner.
Yoga can help you build strength, stability, flexibility, and stamina, and supports every system in the body (muscular, skeletal, digestive, nervous…you name it!) Our hope is that by trying yoga you will start to feel less stressed, more centered, and deeply grounded. You will discover why so many people depend on yoga to help them feel better.
We want to help you get started on a path to better health and increased well being. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Instructor — Maria Williquette
Maria Williquette is a yoga teacher and psychotherapist who has just relocated to Portland from Seattle. She has been teaching yoga with an emphasis on using yoga therapeutically for 9 years and she frequently teaches workshops about using yoga as a tool for healing. Maria also leads 3 yoga retreats annually, 2 in the Pacific Northwest and a 10 day yoga retreat in beautiful Goa, India.
Although more days than not Maria can be found practicing and teaching yoga, she is also an avid gardener, reader, hiker, and world traveler. While traveling, Maria has studied yoga in places as diverse as Argentina, South Africa, India, and Nepal and has completed two 200 hr yoga teacher trainings and extensive ongoing education (currently enrolled in a 500 hr training). Maria holds a Master’s Degree in counseling psychology and had a private practice in Seattle. Now she is taking some time off from therapy to enjoy being a new mom! It is Maria’s passion to combine the wisdom of yoga with the study of psychology to create a therapeutic and deeply healing yoga practice.
As a teacher, Maria embodies depth and connection; joy and creativity. She will certainly arrive to class with a smile and she delights in connecting with every student who attends class with her. Both on and off the mat, Maria looks to each moment of each day for opportunities to learn and to practice gratitude.
